Evelyn Sum

Evelyn Sum is a ceramic sculptor and painter, born and raised in Hong Kong. She studied at The Art Institute of Chicago and now lives and works in New York. ⠀⠀Artists Statement: ⠀⠀"I consider my ceramics as drawings and paintings that are poetic devices that portray imageries of both the familiar and the uncanny. ⠀⠀By revisiting personal and universal experiences, I construct a narrative that eludes the distinction between shared memories, my Euro-Centric Art Education, and the imagined. I satisfy my curiosity by bringing my free-hand drawing style into three-dimensional forms with the clay body, and I embrace my femininity through my physical touch and interests in subject matters. It allows me and the audience to engage with less physical barriers. I am intrigued to see if they trigger a nostalgic memory that stays afloat in a person’s subconscious."⠀
